What Is Museum Lab?
Concept

To establish an intimate dialog between the visitor and the work of art.

The Louvre defines "mediation" as the full range of tools and resources used to forge a relationship between the viewer and a work of art: exhibitions, catalogs and the work of curators are the most important facets of the museum's cultural mediation, but the term also applies to lectures and guided tours, workshops, and installations in the museum itself: in short, all the many ways in which information is conveyed to the visitor, and which underpin and inform his or her encounter with the works of art on display. Since its foundation, Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) has played a vital and important role in the development of "mediation" tools. As a leading commercial player in the field, and as a corporate sponsor of the arts and culture, DNP has made a wide-ranging contribution to the promotion of communications in today's world, on paper, via electronic media, and of course on the Internet. DNP has also developed new systems for the presentation and dissemination of information, adapted to today's needs.

Louvre - DNP Museum Lab invites the public to experiment with new mediation tools designed to enhance their appreciation of a work of art: to study artworks in detail, and to deliver a deeper understanding of their background and meaning.

Mediation

Seven innovative approaches to works of art, based on state-of-the-art information technology, and digital imaging techniques.

Museum Lab aims to promote and develop a wholly integrated approach to the design of interpretive resources or “mediation tools”, creating synergies between the ways in which the artworks are displayed, the project's Web site, and the various events taking place throughout the presentation. Museum Lab is experimenting this approach with six different presentations, each lasting six months, to be staged twice a year over a three-year period. Selected works or groups of works from the Louvre's collections are displayed at the dedicated Museum Lab space in Gotanda. Visitors can try out a range of multimedia tools drawing on state-of-the-art technology and digital imaging. The Museum Lab Web site complements and reflects the visitor's experience of the presentation itself, and provides in-depth information about the works on display. The many events organised during the presentation – lectures, workshops – are designed as a rich, stimulating learning experience.

Museum Lab invites visitors to experience a totally new approach to works of art, based on interactive tools designed to enhance their appreciation and deliver key background information. A new kind of relationship between the viewer and the work of art, echoing the spirit of the age.
