Art and Interface The Challenge of Tangible Bits

By giving physical form to digital information, Tangible Bits seeks to realize a vision of seamless interface design. Unlike conventional interfaces that make much of “function” and “usability,” Tangible Bits takes a “concept”-centered approach. In the Fifth Louvre - DNP Museum Lab presentation, with the collaboration of Professor Hiroshi Ishii of MIT Media Lab who pioneered Tangible Bits, we have developed an experimental “Guide to Artworks” that uses the visual characteristics of an artwork as a lead to understanding in terms of art history. This lecture will discuss the outlook for research into new interfaces that bring together people and art, based on numerous examples of media art exhibitions, including the Museum Lab project.

Hiroshi Ishii was born in Tokyo in 1956. He graduated from the department of electronic engineering of Hokkaido University in 1978 and obtained an M.E. in computer engineering there in 1980. He gained a Ph.D. in 1992. From 1988 to 1994 he led a research team at NTT Human Interface Laboratories that developed TeamWorkStation and ClearBoard. From 1993 to 1994 he was a visiting Associate Professor at Toronto University, Canada. He moved to the MIT Media Lab in 1995. His ongoing research into Tangible Bits, not confined to human interaction, continues to greatly influence industrial design, building and environmental design, town planning, and media art. In recognition of these achievements, he was awarded tenure at MIT in 2001, and was elected to the CHI Academy by ACM SIGCHI in 2006. He is currently Associate Director at MIT Media Lab.
